The island-Province of Bohol lies at the center of the Philippines, southeast of Cebu and southwest of Leyte. The 10th largest island of the Philippines, Bohol is home to one city – the provincial capital of Tagbilaran, and 47 municipalities. The provincial government has organized the towns of the province into five clusters under the Bohol Integrated Area Development (BIAD) program. BIAD V is comprised of eight (8) municipalities located in central Bohol, occupying some 23% of Bohol’s total land area, including the iconic Chocolate Hills of Bohol. Approximately 30% of this is classified as timberland area while the remaining 70% has been classified as alienable and disposable.
BIAD V is considered as the rice granary of the province, accounting for most of the province’s rice production. In line with this, BIAD V has launched an integrated program for the Production, Marketing, and Technology Enhancement of Organic Rice (PROMOTE-RICE). The program seeks to promote local economic development (LED) by strengthening organic rice production and marketing through three key activities:
- Ensuring the availability of quality inputs (e.g. farmer knowledge and fertilizers) to organic agriculture
- Ensuring the quality of BIAD V’s organic agriculture products (e.g. installation of organic agriculture quality standards), and
- Enabling BIAD V’s organic products to reach wider markets.
