The island-Province of Bohol lies at the center of the Philippines, southeast of Cebu and southwest of Leyte. The 10th largest island of the Philippines, Bohol is home to one city – the provincial capital of Tagbilaran, and 47 municipalities. The provincial government has organized the towns of the province into five clusters under the Bohol Integrated Area Development (BIAD) program. BIAD V is comprised of eight (8) municipalities located in central Bohol, occupying some 23% of Bohol’s total land area, including the iconic Chocolate Hills of Bohol. Approximately 30% of this is classified as timberland area while the remaining 70% has been classified as alienable and disposable.

BIAD V is considered as the rice granary of the province, accounting for most of the province’s rice production. In line with this, BIAD V has launched an integrated program for the Production, Marketing, and Technology Enhancement of Organic Rice (PROMOTE-RICE). The program seeks to promote local economic development (LED) by strengthening organic rice production and marketing through three key activities:

  1. Ensuring the availability of quality inputs (e.g. farmer knowledge and fertilizers) to organic agriculture
  2. Ensuring the quality of BIAD V’s organic agriculture products (e.g. installation of organic agriculture quality standards), and
  3. Enabling BIAD V’s organic products to reach wider markets.
